Have you heard that acai berry is now considered as one of the top super antioxidants? Yes, it’s worthy of being described as being both “top” and “super” in the antioxidants department. Its antioxidant level is so high off the (ORAC) charts that the media ? from TV talk shows to newspaper ads to websites ? has been caught up in featuring this little berry from Brazil. But what really is the fuss all about? Or to put it more bluntly, what does being a super antioxidant mean? Here’s a quick chemistry tutorial.
Antioxidants and Free Radicals Explained
Getting a better idea of the interplay between antioxidants and free radicals requires some chemistry basics but I’ll try to make it as simple as possible. First, let’s define what a free radical is. It’s actually just a molecule that’s missing an electron. Whether we like it or not, we absorb free radicals into the body because they can be caused by pollutants in the air, stress, and food chemicals. In small amounts, the body can tolerate free radicals. But they won’t remain in small concentration because a free radical can steal electrons from other molecules, in turn, creating more free radicals. With too many of them, these free radicals can lead to grave health problems like cancer and heart diseases.

Americans spend more than $2 billion each year on sleep-aiding medications. Sleep is supposed to be a natural process. What’s going on? There are many issues in the way of getting a good night’s sleep. Daily stresses such as work problems, financial difficulties, family challenges - can all keep a person up at night.1 We rehash what was said over and over again, or we endlessly review the problems confronting us, creating more anxiety and worry while the minutes and maybe even hours tick away.
Eating late at night - particularly fat-filled foods and snacks - may also interfere with the ability to fall asleep and sleep restfully. Late night meals engage all the resources of your digestive system - your body is actually doing a lot of work when it’s supposed to be resting. Not good. And, of course, a lot of this late night food is stored as fat, creating additional problems.
Not enough exercise also contributes to lack of restful sleep.2,3 When you’re doing vigorous physical work, your body needs to recover. Sleep allows your body to repair and rebuild, getting stronger in the process. Regardless of one’s stresses and worries, vigorous exercise makes a physical demand on your body that will put you right to sleep. If you’re not exercising regularly, this strong physiologic need for deep rest is missing, and you’ll likely be tossing and turning the night away.

If you watch athletics and sports events on the TV or go to a stadium live to see a meet or a match then you may quite often see athletes/sports people snacking on a banana. This isn’t just about the fact that they may like the taste of this fruit, the fact is that the humble banana is a bit of an energy super fruit!
Bananas are a rich source of naturally occurring sugars so basically eating a banana can give you the kind of immediate energy rush or sugar hit that you might get from a candy bar. But, the energy rush you get here will be a healthy one which is why this fruit is often the snack of choice for people participating in sports or training.
So, eating a banana can give you a quick energy boost but what happens when this initial boost wears off? Well, the beauty of a banana is that, unlike the candy bar, the rush doesn’t disappear almost immediately leaving you wanting more. A banana is absorbed relatively slowly into your system so that you get a slow and steady release of energy over time rather than that simple one-off hit.
